I have a sewing project I’ve been working on more slow than steady. In the daytime, when energies are somewhat high, I want to work on it. But having a curious preschooler nearby keeps me from getting out the pins and patterns. The best time for me to sew is when the kids are tucked in and the house is still. Unfortunately, by that hour I am zonked, and my brain doesn’t want to work at that high level at that time of night. It would rather recuperate in front of one of my favorite TV shows like: American Idol or Duck Dynasty.
Tonight, however, I have tons of energy! Praise the Lord for that. But I have something more important to do tonight (which I am going to continue working on as soon as I finish this note.) Every Tues. night I prepare a lesson for a sort-of-Sunday School class at our church, but it’s on Wednesdays. It’s a program called AWANA. It stands for Approved Workmen Are Not Ashamed. Anyways, I have a lot of energy to do my hobby tonight, but something else is more gratifying to me. It’s to do God’s work. The Scripture verse John 4:34 popped in my head, but I substituted the word “entertainment” for the word “food”. “My ENTERTAINMENT is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work.” THAT is my joy! I think food can be replaced with anything that competes for time devoted to God. Don’t you think?
Right before Jesus said those words, he was tired from a long journey and sitting down at a well. His disciples went to go find some food. Even though Jesus was tired and hungry he ministered to a woman who had a lot of what we call “issues.” She had been married 5 times and living with some guy. She was pretty much the outcast. Other women probably didn’t respect her or want to talk to her. They probably kept their husbands under lock & key when she was around. Jesus saw that her real need was Him- a love that could finally fill the deep hole she desperately tried to fill with men. She didn’t need a man. She needed God. That woman became a believer and told the whole town about Jesus. Other villagers believed in Jesus just by her testimony alone. They came out to see Jesus and invited him to stay a few days. Many more believed in him after that. After Jesus was done talking with the woman, the disciples came back with the food and urged him to eat. That’s when Jesus said his food is to do the will of the Father. He knew true satisfaction comes from having a relationship with God and doing the purpose God prepared for him. The same goes for us. Do you have a relationship with God through Jesus Christ? If so, are you walking in the purpose he predestined for you? If you haven’t, I urge you to fall in love with Jesus. He has been the greatest time of my life!
